Obituary of Roger Lee Mitchem

Roger Lee Mitchem, 97, of Clinton, Missouri passed away Friday evening, March 8, 2019 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, MO. He was born January 8, 1922 in Clinton, MO, the son of Benjamin Mitchem and Vera (Coddington) Mitchem.

 

He married Nola Marie Johnston on November 25, 1944 in Clinton. She preceded him in death on November 11, 2014.

 

Roger worked various different occupations. He owned and operated dry cleaning businesses and restaurants and bars. He worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller, an accident investigator and then as an aviation instructor. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps where he trained pilots.

 

He was a member of the Lutheran faith. He was a graduate of Clinton High School. He was a member of AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association). Roger enjoyed flying, fishing all over the world and photography. Most of all he enjoyed taking family trips all over the country in his Mooney airplane. 

 

Surviving are two daughters, Amy M. Wilson and her husband Doug, Bayfield, Colorado and Marie C. Mitchem, Charlottesville, Virginia; six grandchildren, Lee Meyer and her husband Andrew, San Antonio, TX, Paula Boston and her husband Andy, Sarah Mitchem, California, Sam Corken, Charlottesville, VA, Lee Wilson and his wife Cheryl, Casper, Wyoming and Jenny Dornier and her husband Doug, Beaumont, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Aaron and Charlotte Meyer, Rex Boston, Roger Wilson, and Amy and Julie Dornier; one sister-in-law, Billie Mitchem, Mountain Grove, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his wife Nola, he was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Booth Mitchem; and four brothers, Fred Mitchem, Richard Mitchem, Stanley Mitchem and Dan Mitchem.

 

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the Bradley & Hadley Funeral Home, Clinton. Burial will be in Englewood Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from noon to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial gifts to the Veterans Assistance League, and these donations may be left in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be left online at www.bradleyhadley.com.
